General Outline

This course covers the ‘full range’ of the basics in Microsoft Excel. We cater for all versions and participants, whether they’ve been self-taught, have been using Excel simply for a while, or have no experience at all.

In the course, you’ll learn how to create, edit and format a spreadsheet as well as how to create basic charts. Lots of shortcuts are covered to save time, and participants will see how easy it is manage data with Excel.

This course is a great springboard into using Excel to its maximum advantage.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe Excel, its screen layout and make it easier to find buttons and functions.
  • Enter data and simple formulas.
  • Navigate with mouse and keyboard.
  • Change displays and freeze parts of spreadsheets.
  • Edit a spreadsheet (add, remove rows, columns, etc).
  • Cut, paste and copy formulas.
  • Format a spreadsheet to make it look presentable.
  • Create and edit simple charts and graphs.
  • Print or email spreadsheets and charts.
  • Use shortcuts and quick-entry techniques.
  • Save and open spreadsheets to correct drive/folder locations.
  • Use Excel to filter, sort and view data efficiently

This course goes beyond the basics and focuses on easier and more powerful ways to ‘massage’, manipulate and report your data.

After a revision of the important basics and shortcuts, how to work with large spreadsheets more efficiently and how to analyse raw data are some of the important features covered.

Many shortcuts and time-saving techniques used in managing and working with spreadsheets are covered.

  • Revise the basics and shortcuts.
  • Make formulas update automatically when adding new data.
  • Use filters to easily see and analyse the data you want.
  • Manipulate data more easily—find duplicates, split data, etc.
  • Create cell name ranges to make formulas easier.
  • Group and outline large data to summarise it easily.
  • Use sheets, calculate across sheets and link to files.
  • Easily sort and arrange data and use SubTotals on raw data.
  • Create powerful reports with PivotTables.
  • Use styles and comments to communicate and format.
  • Format charts better to improve presentation.

The course focuses on how to create more powerful reports from your data, how to speed that process up and automate it, and how to make it all user-friendly.

You’ll learn how powerful macros can be. And we’ll show you how to adapt it all to your work to save time and solve your problems.

  • Use features to update and massage data automatically.
  • Use text formulas/functions (LEFT, UPPER, etc).
  • Use IF functions (IF, COUNTIF, SUMIF, multiple IFs).
  • Use Lookup functions (V/H LOOKUP).
  • Use complex ‘nested’ formulas to extract data better.
  • Use automated database features and SUBTOTAL functions.
  • Create, edit and troubleshoot macros and VBA.
  • Use data validation to prevent data-entry errors.
  • Use conditional formatting for ‘dashboard’ reporting.
  • Apply data-entry protection to data correctly.
  • Share workbooks and work with templates.
  • Integrate data more efficiently and create live links.
